Wood-firing Kiln
We have two working wood-firing kilns at “Keramion”.
A modern, box-shaped kiln with a capacity of 2000 liters and an open, circular updraft kiln with a perforated intermediate floor and a capacity of one cubic meter. This is the type of kiln mainly used throughout Crete, from antiquity to the present day.
The firing process takes 12 hours, starting early in the morning and ending at sunset when the temperature in the kiln reaches 1000°C.
When the pottery has been fired, the reduction process is started by removing oxygen from the kiln to capture the traces of the fire and the unique colors that make each piece of pottery individual and special.
After firing, all the pottery is checked and left in water for 24 hour, so that it becomes stronger.
